You may have heard the phrase “sleep with one eye open.” While it’s usually meant as a metaphor about protecting yourself, you may wonder if it’s actually possible to sleep with one eye open and one closed.
In fact, there are a variety of medical conditions that may make it impossible to close your eyes when you sleep. Some of these may lead to sleeping with one eye open and one eye closed.
For Human, it's a disease. Some kind of Physical Problem.
But there are some living beings who sleeps with one eye open to live happily ever after.
Everyone knows that dolphins are truly unusual animals, so it is not surprising that they always sleep with one eye open. If you’ve ever felt the need to sleep with one eye open, you have something in common with these extraordinarily intelligent animals.
Dolphins keep one eye open while they sleep. They do so because they are unable to fall into an unconscious state while sleeping. This is because dolphins must periodically return to the surface in order to breathe, and they must remain vigilant in case predators are about.
Dolphins and whales often sleep with one eye open to avoid being eaten by sharks. Like whales, dolphins and related Dalla porpoises sleep with one eye open so that half of their brains are asleep.
The way dolphins deal with this is by putting one half of their brain to sleep while the other half is still conscious and functioning. During sleep, the bottlenose dolphin turns off only half of its brain, along with the opposite eye.

Dolphins cannot sleep in this way; they have to remain conscious, even when they are sleeping. This is because their breathing is not automatic, it is consciously controlled. In other words, dolphins have to actively decide when to breathe, and so they must be continually conscious to breathe. If like us, dolphins went into a deep unconscious sleep, they would stop breathing and suffocate or drown.
To get around this, dolphins only allow one half of their brains to sleep at a time; the other half stays alert to enable the dolphin to continue breathing and look out for dangers in the environment. Dolphins only close one eye when they sleep; the left eye will be closed when the right half of the brain sleeps, and vice versa. This type of sleep is known as Un-hemispheric sleep as only one brain hemisphere sleeps at a time. Dolphins alternate which half of the brain is sleeping periodically so that they can get the rest they need without ever losing consciousness.
When sleeping, dolphins often rest motionless at the surface of the water, breathing regularly or they may swim very slowly and steadily, close to the surface. In shallow water, dolphins sometimes sleep on the seabed rising regularly to the surface to breath.
Facts about Dolphins:
When humans take a breath, they replace only 15% of the air in their lungs with fresh air. When dolphins take a breath, they replace 90% of the air in their lungs with fresh air.
Dusky and spinner dolphins can leap 20 feet (6.1 m) or higher in the air. In fact, spinner dolphins get their name from spinning and somersaulting above the waves.
Scientists believe that dolphins don’t ever fall into a deep sleep; therefore, they probably don’t dream.
