What is It Like to Study in The Multicultural Land of India?
India is a land of many discoveries and innovations. The competitive learning environment encourages students to think out-of-the-box and thrive in their academic journey.
India has mix of rich cultures and heritage. In addition to attaining inclusive education, there is so much to explore, from multiple cuisines, distinct and joyful festivals to many forms of music, art and dance.
The Beginning
The Indian education system began with ancient scriptures thousands of years ago. It has now transformed into modern-day education imparted in the finest of institutions. The network of 42,000+ colleges and 1000+ universities have aided India to become an attractive education hub for international students. The same richness of Indian higher education needed due focus and led to the birth of the idea of the Study in India programme.
The Study In India (SII) programme is a flagship project introduced by the Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India. The ‘Study in India’ portal (www.studyinindia.gov.in) was jointly launched on 18th April 2018 by the former Minister of Union External Affairs, Late Smt. Sushma Swaraj and former Minister of State for HRD, Dr Satya Pal Singh at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi. The Study in India programme seeks to endorse India as a prime education hub for international students by inviting them to pursue their higher education in the country.
The education sector in India and abroad saw a significant shift, particularly for students seeking admission to international programs. Most of the institutes shifted to new ways of learning by laying more emphasis on online education and the universities have made a paradigm shift in the way they operate. The education sector has upped its game, making accessibility easier with blended learning. Wondering what is blended learning? It is an approach to systematically mix in-person teaching with online learning. University faculty in India regularly conduct classes and lectures with added webinars, not to mention a more personalized teaching experience built for students. The flexible courses are also being delivered to students to make learning an engaging activity and create a better experience.
Hence, it is a great time to apply abroad - particularly in India.
Problems for students in India for Indian Citizens
Pre-Decided Career Paths
As seen in recent blockbuster 'Three Idiots' in our society the fate of a child's career is decided upon right at the moment of their birth. The entire world contemplates upon the career that would be suitable for you while on the other hand you still haven't received a proper name. And right from the moment you are ready to start school there is but one anthem that you are preached upon that you are to become a doctor or an engineer or do MBA from the IIMs. In most cases no one even bothers asking you what your preferences are and what you want to become.
The Never-ending cycle of rote learning
Another interesting fact is that during the school years, the measure of a child's intelligence is defined by how well he/she can mug up the things taught in class. We used to spend sleepless nights as early as a 5th standard student. Why? Simply because the next day was a term exam of social science. But, what of those poor beings who had razor sharp minds that were more involved in understanding the basics or the concepts behind the topic rather than mugging it up without understanding a word? They were deemed stupid, and charged guilty of possessing a brain that couldn't mug up useless things.
NGSF INTERNSHIP PROGRAM 2023
Next Gen Scientists Foundation (registered under the Trust act of India 1882) offers an opportunity to fund internships for undergraduate and postgraduate students who wish to gain research experience in life sciences. Interns will conduct independent research under the mentorship of Principal Investigator of their interest at select Indian institutes. This year, they will continue to accept applications for remote internships in Computational Biology, in addition to the usual on-site internships. However, please note that remote interns will comprise a maximum of 20% of the final selected cohort. NGS interns can apply to get their final year thesis projects funded starting 2024.
India Universities for international Students
Very poor students can attend public institutions for free, pending they are accepted. Students attending public universities and colleges in India pay tuition fees of approximately $50 per year. Private institutions are operated on a for-profit business model. Most faculty lack quality in teaching, research, and training. Other issues that compound the problems include outdated, rigid curricula and the absence of employer engagement in the course content and skills development. Very few opportunities for interdisciplinary learning.
India has four major types of Universities such as Central Universities that are managed by the government of India; State Universities; Private Universities and regulated by the UGC and local state statutes; and religious minorities institutions, run by trusts of their respective communities.
Educational institutions are spread across the country; however, international students might find more suitable locations to be the bigger cities such as New Delhi, Pune, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Bengaluru.
However, Pune and Bengaluru, in particular, have emerged as popular destinations for international students because of their temperate climate, metropolitan culture, good presence of foreigners, and quality education.
Tuition fees in India are much cheaper than in the UK and many other popular studies abroad destinations. Indian universities set their fees, but they typically fall between £2,500 and £6,000 per year for international students.
India's system of higher education is the third largest in the world.
